Ford New Small Car launch in 2010

Ford India plans to launch new small car in 2010 in India. Ford India said troubles which its parent company facing in US will not affect its $500 million investments plan for India, and also added that Ford new small car might be launched in India in early 2010.

MD and president of Ford India, Michael Boneham said that Ford India planning to go ahead with its expansion plans as scheduled. The leading auto manufacturer of US, Ford India posted a record $14.7 billion loss in year 2008 globally and had announced around half-a-billion dollar investment for India last year to double its production capacity to 2 lakh units and make 2.5 lakh petrol and diesel engines.

The company official sais that they are making efforts to ensure that Ford new small car, which is being specially designed for the Indian market, will be priced at a very competetive price. Ford new small car might face tough competition from big players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata. "Ford new small car will be the first offering from company in the mass-market segment and we are making efforts to keep this car cost-competitive while making it a great value proposition," he added.

The company currently sells three box sedans like Ford Ikon and Ford Fiesta in India apart from its most popular SUV Ford Endeavour and has seen sales shrinking around 19% in April - February 2009 period with 24849 units. Boneham said that they expected sales numbers to turn positive once the Ford new small car hits the Indian market.

Ford new small car would come with petrol and diesel engine options, both variants will fall within the small car definition of the Indian government to avail lower excise benefits i.e. petrol engine under 1200cc and diesel under 1500cc with overall length below four metres.
