Tata Motors has first launched the first generation of Tata Safari in year 1998 and it is the most popular SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) model since its launch. Tata Safari is the first truly SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) model that is designed, developed and manufactured entirely in India. To improve its over all performance including its engine performance, acceleration and fuel efficiency, Tata Motors launched the new Tata Safari with newer 2.2L, 2197cc DICOR (Direct Injection Common Rail) engine. The new DICOR engine of Tata Safari is well known for delivering high engine performance with improved fuel efficiency. In Indian market, Tata Safari is available with both petrol and diesel engine option and with nine variants and its all variants are available in the price range of Rs 7.70 lacs to Rs 11.65 lacs (as ex showroom prices in New Delhi).
Tata Safari is available with nine variants out of which its seven variants are equipped with the new DICOR diesel engine and rest two variants are powered by the petrol engine. The all diesel variants of Tata Safari are packed with the new 2.2L, 2197cc, 16 Valve, DICOR engine with VTT (Variable Turbine Technology) that produces 140bhp power at 4000rpm and 320Nm torque at 1700~2700rpm. This DICOR engine delivers high engine performance with great acceleration so that the new Tata Safari can cross the mark of 100kmph in just 15.4 seconds and can touch the max speed mark of 154kmph. This DICOR engine also offers increased fuel efficiency in comparison to older version of Tata Safari - it offers mileage 11kmpl in city road condition while on highway it gives 15kmpl mileage. On the other hand the petrol powered Tata Safari is equipped with 2.1L, 2092cc petrol engine that produces 127bhp power at 5630rpm and 198Nm torque at 3750rpm and make it able to cross the 100kmph mark in 15.6 seconds and to achieve the max speed mark of 157kmph. This petrol engine offers mileage around 7kmpl in city while on highway it gives 12kmpl mileage. Both diesel and petrol powered variants of Tata Safari are also available with 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) option.
In India, Tata Safari captured the whole SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) market since its launch in 1998. However, it faced tough competition with Mahindra Scorpio but it remains popular in youth because of its stylish and sporty look. Price is also a reason for Tata Safari much popularity as other SUVs that are available in Indian market like Ford Endeavour, Honda CRV, Maruti Grand Vitara and Chevrolet Captiva are priced much higher.
