Auto Expos around the world witnessed a number of concept electric models this year. The Delhi auto expo too saw its fair share of these models out of which the General Motors (GM) Electric Chevrolet Spark looks like the most promising one. GM had signed an MoU with Reva Electric last year to produce electric car models in India. Taking a big leap into the electric car market in India GM is all set to launch the Chevrolet Spark electric by 2011. GM officials say that the plan is moving as per schedule and that Chevrolet Spark electric is all set to become the first electric four-door car in the country. According to Chetan Maini, deputy chairman, Reva, “The GM project is on schedule and we are likely to be ready with a pilot version of the e-Spark by the end of 2010.”
General Motors is all set to leverage the most of the electric market and is leaving no stone unturned to have its presence in every segment. Karl Slym, president and managing director, GM India is very upbeat about the whole electric market and feels that other models like Beat or Chevrolet Volt would also get electric versions eventually. He added, “I can assure there will be more and more electric vehicles on the road eventually and we (GM) will have to be amongst that.” The initial target of GM for Chevrolet Electric Spark would be to produce 5000 units. Later on GM would also bring the electric versions of its other models. GM might upgrade its hatchbacks and sedans to electric platform depending upon the market response to Chevrolet Spark Electric.
