With hatchbacks pouring this season, there is a clear distinction of "Value" and "premium" hatchbacks that has stood in the fore-front. The customers of the former segment have preference to the price label and are willing to compromise on features, while the ones in the latter segment are more inclined towards better features and quality, indeed ready to loosen more bucks. Flamboyant and stylish Hyundai i20 and tall and individualistic Skoda Fabia both fall in the latter category.
Hyundai i20 has got a upright and not so sleek design that allows the car to ensure that maximum space is being churned out, despite the fact that the wheel base is not so large. The car has been popular for the seating capacity and comfort ever since the early user-responses started to float in the automobile market. The interiors of Hyundai i20 have been designed very intelligently with detailed steering wheel, information pod on the dash and the two-tone split adding a lot of character to the characteristic design. Suspension is another factor that is crucial in making the driving on Indian roads more comfortable and Hyundai i20 is pretty good with that.
Hyundai has been able to justify its tag of a "feature-loaded" car as Hyundai i20 comes with some exciting and interesting features like climate control, auto folding mirrors, six-optional airbags and steering mounted controls too. The driving is made very comfortable with adjustable seats and well placed controls. The rear seats of Hyundai i20 are the best and extremely comfortable for an easy sitting of three adults.
Skoda Fabia has such comfortable seats both in the front and rear that it actually feels like a luxury car. The car has got superb interiors and outshines all cars in the segment. The most interesting and worth noticing aspect of the car is the availability of various small cubbyholes, big-door pockets and a triplet of three point seat bealt at the rear end. Skoda Fabia indeed offers many features close to that in luxury cars like auto up and down power windows.
One feature that I found to be very interesting is the availability of heated windows, a feature that restricts the formation of fog in rainy days. With just a turn of a door lock you can actually lock all the four gates of the car. Interesting indeed haan??? Skoda Fabia is famous for having the largest leg-room and head space in the genre. The boot space is also generous enough for standard Indian families.
With Shah Rukh advertising ferociously about the all new Kappa engine of Hyundai i20, the car is a wonder in the Indian traffic scenario. The car offers effortless driving in crowded city rush. The gearbox needs very little muscle power and the steering is light like a breeze.
Skoda Fabia on the other hand shares the Volkswagen Polo's three cylinder engine but with some minor differences. The best part of Fabia's driving comfort is the accurate gearbox, that is a need as important as oxygen for the soul. The short gearing and strong mid range makes Fabia the quickest car when it comes to in-gear acceleration.
But, in terms of engine it is Hyundai i20 that wins hands down and especially a fun on highways. The engine gives an average of 11.2 kmpl in city which is impressive. Ultimately the buyers of premium hatchback segment have loads of options and a range of features to choose from. Both Hyundai i20 and Skoda Fabia are great cars both in terms of features and performance.
