German luxury car, Porsche, might start assembling its luxury SUV Porsche Cayenne in India. Porsche Cayenne amounts to about 65 per cent of the company’s total sales and thus it is an important model for the company. Also, if the company does make this move then the import duty of the car would be halved. However a leading business daily quoted Ashish Chordia, CEO of Porsche India denying these rumours. According to him, “Porsche stands for ‘Made in Germany’ quality, and currently there are no plans of either assembling or manufacturing Porsches in India.” Porsche is manufactured in Zuffenhausen and Leipzig and exported to other countries. Such an operation would be a first of its kind for the company if it happens.
The Porsche Cayenne, petrol SUV, is a premium luxury segment car with a price tag of Rs 65 lakh to 1.27 crore. Porsche is soon going to bring an all-new diesel variant of the Cayenne by end July. Precision Cars India, takes care of sales, marketing, dealer network development and all relevant activities for Porsche in India.
Sources claim that Porsche, which will be merged with Volkswagen next year, is looking at assembling only Cayenne at parent Volkswagen’s facility in the country. There are no plans of a new plant as the volumes are low. But the company can bring down the import duty by assembling completely knocked down (CKD) kits to 40 percent from 113 percent.
Porsche has Centres in cities like Chandigarh, Kochi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad also. The company has been selling in India since 2004. Last year alone the company sold 138 cars and has plans of selling 250 units this year. Porsche’s portfolio includes 32 models including the 911, Boxster/Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera range in the country.
