The Indian passenger car market hit another milestone with the June sales figures of the companies. This time the number one and two positions are both held tightly by India-based car makers with Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors on number one and two respectively. The Indian carmaker Tata Motors surpassed Hyundai to be country's second-biggest passenger vehicle maker in June. All thanks to the tiny Tata Nano whose production started at Sanand in Gujarat. This has led to a swell in numbers for Tata Motors.
This time the race for the second spot was an interesting one as the first is usually held by big daddy Maruti Suzuki. It was indeed the sales of Tata Nano that were pegged at 7704 units in June that gave Tata Motors the edge over Hyundai. Also there was an increase in the overall passenger vehicle volumes of Tata Motors. The number went up 63% to touch 27811 units, which is more than Hyundai's posted figure that stands at 27366 units and translates to a rise of about 19%. This seems to be becoming a trend with Tata Motors. It is being anticipated that the Tata Nano numbers would constantly help Tata Motors post good numbers and stay ahead of Hyundai. However, one must always account for variable change.
On the number one spot stands the country’s biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki that saw sales in the domestic market going up 18% year-on-year at 72812 units. Usually, the demand for cars remains less in monsoon months. And the sales of auto companies have been good in June as the demand for new models has been good and the financing has been convenient.
Numbers for carmakers General Motors and Ford have also been good. The two companies are riding on the success of their latest compact car offerings Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo. The two car makers have read the pulse of the market correctly and have Toyota and Mercedes for company. While Toyota saw its numbers surging by 41.5% and reopened bookings for its Fortuner SUV, Mercedes growth was an impressive 94%.
The companies that saw the red were Honda and Mahindra and Mahindra. Mahindra's UV sales fell by 4% in June.
