General Motors to introduce 6 new models over next two years

General Motors is planning to introduce 6 new models in the domestic market in the coming twenty four months. Substantially, the company will also hike its marketing spend for boosting the sales, said a top official of the company. Already, this auto major is selling 8 products including Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Beat , the hatchbacks, for example, Chevrolet Aveo UVA and sedans as Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Optra and Chevrolet Cruze in the luxury segemnt. In the SUV segment only, the company has also got its Chevrolet Tavera model.

Sumit Sawhney , GM India's Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), stated that they are very much hopeful about the auto sector of India and being a major player, General Motors is present in nearly all the segments - from mini cars to SUV. However, the company feels that it requires to extend its products in the utility segment. The company is also planning to introduce one product in the coming 18-months, added Sawhney.

General Motors has also stated that Asha Bhosale will be the goodwill ambassador for the company’s music awards. These awards have to be conducted on November 10, 2010. Previously, this US-based auto major had said that it will be spending an amount close to USD 100-million for making LCVs (Light Commercial Vehicles). From the Halol plant of the company, the company will be manufacturing a passenger carrier, one goods carrier and uitility vehicles. The Halol plant of the company is situated in Gujarat and it manufactures all present models of GM except for the products Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Beat. The Spark and Beat products of GM are manufactured at Talegaon in Maharashtra. The company will be manufacturing the utility cars that can be compared with models like Maruti Eeco and Tata Winger. These utility vehicles will be manufactured with the help of the joint venture with top Chinese auto firm.

Sawhney also commented that General Motors will be introducing five more products in the coming two years. The company is exploring and analyzing all opportunities for stepping into all the segments that will make General Motors a market leader in the country. The company will be displaying its first electric car Volt in the beginning of next year. Sawhney also said that the electric car Volt will be introduced globally in December.
