Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento doing well

Volkswagen started making its presence felt in the Indian car market with the launch of its Hatchback model Volkswagen Polo and later its sedan the Volkswagen Vento.

The company that has under it brands like Skoda and Audi is doing well in the Indian market. Both the cars – Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento – have a waiting period of two to three months each. While the Polo has competition from the like of Ford Figo, Fiat Punto, Hyundai i20 etc the Vento is up against segment leader Honda City and the struggling Fiat Linea.

Both these models are doing well and in order to make up for the demand the company is likely to ramp-up production at its Chakan facility in Maharashtra. Volkswagen Group Sales India (Passenger Cars), Director, Neeraj Garg was quoted in the media saying “Presently, we have at least two to three months of waiting period for the Polo and Vento. We are ramping-up capacity at our Chakan facility to meet demand. We have started a second shift to scale-up production to meet the high demand for the Polo and Vento. We are gradually ramping-up production, but not rapidly, as we do not want to compromise on quality.”

So far the company has managed to sell – 4,613 units of Polo and Vento in the month of November this year. In the period between January – November the company has managed to sell 26,000 units across all models. The company had targeted to achieve a production of 1.1 lakh units at its Chakan plant by end 2011, which is the full annual capacity of the plant. So far the company’s investment in the country comes up to Rs 3,800 crore.

The company is also planning to expand the dealership network from the current 61. Volkswagen’s portfolio includes Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen Vento, Volkswagen Polo, premium sedans Volkswagen Phaeton, Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Jetta. The company also has a sports utility vehicle Volkswagen Touareg on offer.
