The last year was a special year in the history of the Indian car market. More than a dozen launches and upgrades kept the sales figures sky high and attracted more and more global players to Indian shores.
It looks like the New Year is going to continue the trend. One of the leading carmakers in the country General Motors India, announced its plan to launch six new cars in the country in a span of two years. The company also has intentions of investing $100 million (about Rs 450 crore) to increase production capacity at its Halol plant in Gujarat. The company offers models like Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Beat, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Captiva et al.

The company has partners with Chinese carmaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and General Motors India is now a 50:50 joint venture between GM and SAIC.
And is likely to bring out 14 new variants of its existing car models. General Motors India President and Managing Director Karl Slym was quoted in the press saying, “In the next 24 months, we will launch six mew models of passenger cars and 14 new versions (of existing models).”

The company’s plant in Gujarat has a capacity of producing 85,000 units per year and after the planned investment of about $100 million in the next 12 months the capacity is likely to go up to 1,05,000 units annually.
Cars like the Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Cruze and multi-utility vehicle Chevrolet Tavera are currently produced in the Gujarat plant.

The products launched in India from the SAIC stable will be up to 90 per cent localized and General Motors will produce the engines from the Talegaon plant.
