Chevrolet Spark Diesel launch on the cards

The American automobile giant General Motors recently launched the much awaited Chevrolet LPG with SMARTECH technology and is also looking forward to launch its diesel variant soon. But if the rumours are to be believed General Motors is also thinking on the lines of launching the diesel variant of its flagship Chevrolet Spark.

With Chevrolet launching the diesel variant of Chevrolet Spark, the king of the Indian auto market might face difficulties in maintaining the popularity of its hatchback Maruti Alto. General Motors India’s Vice President P. Balendran recently announced General Motors India will incorporate a 1 Liter CRDI Diesel engine in its popular hatchback Chevrolet Spark. The GM’s Diesel 1 Liter engine is likely to displace around 936cc as it basically is an in house chopped up, three cylinder version of the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet diesel engine.

It is also being highly speculated that the powerful engine which is capable of producing 56 Bhp of power and 140-150 Nm of torque will first be Incorporated in soon to be launched diesel variant of Chevrolet Beat which weighs in at about 960 kilograms. This might make the 963c engine a little less powerful for the Chevrolet Beat Diesel. On the contrary Chevrolet Spark which weighs only 840 kilograms will definitely have an edge over Chevrolet Beat Diesel. The fact that Chevrolet Spark is lighter in weight, with the placement of this engine might make it more efficient and ultra frugal.

Let us hope that GM India in order to differentiate Chevrolet Spark form Chevrolet Beat does not detune the engine. GM india has not given any hint on the launch of Chevrolet Spark Diesel, but if the company manages to launch the diesel variant of its popular hatchback by the end of this year along with an 800cc low priced Spark petrol variant to take on the mighty Maruti Alto.
