Indian car market is buzzing with the launch of compact cars, which is the trend adopted by almost every global car maker today. This strategy is implemented by them after studying the domestic car market for a prolonged period of time, identifying that compact models sell more in India due to their small size and economical price. The current notion is ‘Small sells Big’ and hence we see a large number of sub-four-meter cars in India that includes hatchbacks, saloons, mini-SUVs and Crossovers lined-up for launch in the near future. A compact new cars in any segment is likely to fill the bill of good value-for-money proposition.
Volkswagen for example, which is well known for its high-end models is soon going to unveil its sub-compact hatchback Volkswagen Up in August, this year, hoping to launch in the Indian car market during the next year. This hatch is expected to be cheaper than the Volkswagen Polo. However, deciding that Volkswagen Up might be bit too expensive for a sub-compact hatchback to become a traffic-puller, the German luxury brand has its options open to introduce the Volkswagen Up in the saloon segment. Volkswagen Up saloon is speculated to be equipped with 1.2 litre four cylinder petrol engine or a one litre version, without ruling out an option of a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder TDI or 1.5 TDi and a super-efficient 800 cc turbocharged two-cylinder engine. The Volkswagen Up saloon could be launched around 2013, which might coincide with the similar time frame of the Honda Brio saloon launch. The saloon version of the Honda Brio might roomier compared to its hatch model, with light and preppy looks and with engines of modified 1.2 i-VTEC engine and 1.4 litre diesel engine.
The new Swift Dzire and Hindustan Ambassador CS are lined –up for 2012 launch. The new Swift Dzire is likely to be shorter in length but at the same time providing more space with strategically designed interiors, there-by resulting in the cut-down in the price tag. It is likely to be powered by an upgraded K-series and DDiS engines with possibly an automatic gearbox. Similarly, a shorter and cheaper version of Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador CS is expected in 2012. Another Ford model named Ford Eco Sport built along the Ford Fiesta lines, but in the mini-SUV segment is likely to be launched in 2012. Tata Manza CS is also likely to join the bandwagon of the 2012 launches.
Mahindra Verito, a shorter version of Mahindra Renault Logan is expected to be launched this year, which is another instance to prove the building passion in the saloon segment, is expected to come with enough interior space and with dynamic, efficient diesel engine. With better utilization of the inner space, truncated rear and strongly built, Mahindra mini-Xylo is hoped to be launched in 2011 in a tall-boy model, with the likes of Maruti Wagon R.Another mini SUV of Mahindra’s stable, Mahindra S101-S102 is likely to be launched in 2013 with a very competitive price tag of Rs 3 lakhs, hoped to be powered with a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder engine, to produce 60-70 Bhp.
