Presently there is a mad rush going on by the Indian populace to purchase only diesel engine based cars and the petrol cars are being shunned like anything. The buyers are not realizing the after effects of this frenzied buying of diesel cars in India. At the same time, the Indian government isn't taking any concrete steps towards easing out this deadlock and coming to a congenial solution. Since the announcement of the 2012 union budget by the Indian government there are a couple of very significant declarations that were made. One of them was from the country’s petroleum minister and he stated that there will be no potential deregulation of the diesel price in the country. The second declaration was from the largest car manufacturer in the country, Maruti Suzuki and they are planning to invest close to Rs. 1,700 crore in setting up a diesel engine manufacturing facility to boost the sales of their diesel cars.

With these declarations the sales of diesel cars are set to increase with many people opting for a diesel variant as the price of petrol is sky rocketing and will only increase in the coming future. The difference between both the fuels is presently approximately Rs. 25 per litre and the sales of petrol cars is already on a slump and will deteriorate further if there is any further increase in petrol price. Apparently the retailers are already losing close to Rs. 13 per litre on fuel presently and have projected losses of a whopping Rs. 140,000 crore for this fiscal. The Indian government has to take some tangible decisions very soon before this situation gets out of hand. They can always reduce the excise duty which was hiked in this budget for the petrol cars, so that customers will think about buying them. The government can also remove the subsidies on diesel, so that its price is closer to that of petrol and this will surely bring in some balance to the current circumstances.

The most important factor is to improve the
public transport system and make it more efficient for the people. By encouraging its use the need for individual cars will decrease and will save quite a few things from happening. Apart from that the general population has to be more aware of using car pool, which will substantially decrease the crazy traffic scenario as well as decrease the fuel consumption as well. If there are no stringent measures taken soon, the Indian economy will go for a toss and the disparity between petrol and diesel will increase to a length, wherein it will become unfeasible to come to an amicable result. For the moment, the country’s car market is keenly waiting for the launch of
upcoming cars such as –
Tata Safari Storme, Rio Premier diesel, Renault Duster,
Chevrolet Captiva, Audi Q3 and
Volkswagen Jetta petrol. Apart from this
Maruti Ertiga price for the petrol variant is starting at an affordable Rs. 5.89 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). I recently shared that
who will win the race between Tata Safari Storme and Mahindra XUV 500.
