General Motors India is a subsidiary of American automotive giant General Motors. GM India is actually a joint venture between Sanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) and General Motors. The JV launches all its product under GM's brand Chevrolet. GM India has launched facelift versions of Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Capativa recently. The celebrated brand is in news again because of its much anticipated Sail twins, Chevrolet Sail hatchback and Sail sedan. Chevrolet Sail twins are basically prime SAIC products which are already sizzling Chinese streets. GM's intention to bring these is clearly to replace Chevrolet Aveo siblings (hatchback Aveo U-VA and Aveo sedan), which are not doing as well as expected. GM showcased Sail hatchback at Auto Expo India, earlier this year, where it was pleasing to the crowds. Chevrolet Sail, a premium hatch, will be placed in the B segment, whereas the Sail sedan is an entry level vehicle. GM seems to be set to give direct competition to 'Maruti Suzuki Swift Duo'. GM is about to launch the Sail hatchback by September end. The sedan version will follow the hatchback launch.
The Sail hatchback car, is a good looking car but not a ground breaking one for sure. The design is not contemporary and already seems old for a 2012 car. However, GM has played cleverly and made this effective by putting Beat's heart under the hood for the petrol variant. This will help them get an aid in excise duties as it will be a below 1200cc car and additionaly the car will be a fuel efficient machine. Everyone knows how crucial fuel efficiency and prices are for the Indian consumers. So, the car will be a good package for Indian market. GM India is also planning to offer a higher engine option for Sail hatchback. That will probably be its Aveo sedan's 1400cc engine. Chevrolet Optra Magnum's engine might be another option for this, so they can compete with the likes of Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia. GM is working on finding a perfect diesel engine from its global portfolio and they might once again choose the Beat mill. Chevrolet Beat is the car which has changed GM's stars in India and with the Beat's mills plonked under its hood, Chevrolet Sail may also be an effective one.
The Sail sedan hasn't been unveiled yet but rumours suggest that GM is also bringing in the elder sibling as well. Sail Sedan is undoubtedly a good looking car having glimpses of Chevrolet Aveo. The sedan variant of Chevrolet Sail is an entry level sedan car, which will be a key player for GM India. GM dominates the premium sedan segment with its Chevy Cruze and they are set to repeat the same with the entry level Sail sedan. Chevrolet Sail sedan will most probably house 1.4-litre petrol motor that it might share with its upcoming MPV, Chevrolet Enjoy. As most of us are aware that Chevrolet developed a multi-jet injection diesel engine with Ford. The same engine is used in several Tata and Maruti Suzuki products in India. Chevrolet cars are known for their roomy and comfy interiors and Sail Duos will also have the best in class interiors as their respective segments. The wheel-base is large enough in both, sedan and hatchback and as a result they are spacious enough from inside. Seeing the tough competition in the market the Sail siblings will be priced competitively to get an edge over Maruti Suzuki Swift and Dzire. We are hoping for the best from the up-comers and will expect high performance as other Chevy cars. Recently, I shared that Hyundai Elantra Fluidic Will Be Strongest Contender in D Segment.
