The year 2012 may be inching towards its end, but that hasn't been able to stop automobile makers from expanding their line-up for the current year. With four more months to go, companies like Tata, Chevrolet, Audi and Mercedes are gearing to launch new sedans car, the second most popular type of car in India. Considering the fact that Indian consumers have come to accept sedans as family cars, and that they are an affordable embodiment of comfort and luxury, it is no surprise that the demand for sedans has escalated in amazing proportions. With automobile giants from both, the entry-level and luxury segment ready to contend for the attention of the Indian consumer with new launches, it is time that the Indian roads get ready to sizzle. We bring you a low-down of what to expect in the coming months.
With Renault Scala, Renault lives up to its promise of introducing five cars in the Indian market in 2012. Slated for a September 7 launch, this sedan looks like a rebadged version of Nissan Sunny but after a closer look one can say Renault has managed to give it a unique identity. This sedan by the French auto maker will be powered by either a XH2 petrol engine, or Renault's economical K9K diesel engine. The performance of the engines will be further complemented with a 5-speed automatic and manual gearbox, though the automatic option is available only for the petrol variant. Renault Scala will have a starting price of Rs 5.9 lakh.
Tata Manza CS
Though there has been no official announcement about the launch date of Tata Manza CS, rumour has it that the upgraded version of one of the best selling Tata cars will make its debut somewhere around October. It will likely be powered by the same 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre Quadrajet engines found in Manza. It is expected to be offered in the price range of Rs 6-7 lakhs. Earlier it was expected that this would be an all new product but now that idea has been shunned and the new car Tata Manza CS is said to be a facelift of the existing Tata Manza with few cosmetic changes, expecially in the interiors.
Chevrolet Sail Sedan
The next compact sedan on the list is Chevrolet Sail. Rumoured to be launched in November, we have gathered that the Indian subsidiary of General Motors developed the stylish mid-size sedan to specifically meet the needs of the Indian consumer. Speculated to be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol or 1.3-litre Multijet option. With the typical bowtie grille, side swept headlamps, this stylish sedan's petrol engine is expected to deliver a mileage of 11-15 kmpl, while the diesel may deliver a mileage anywhere between 14-18 kmpl.
Mercedes Benz B Class
Unveiled at the Buddh International Circuit, Mercedes Benz is now ready to offer India its first premium sports tourer. With a rumoured September launch, this offering by the German auto giant features a sporty design accompanied by signature Mercedes design. The options of the 1.6-litre diesel and the 1.8-litre petrol engines will be offered alongwith a 7G-DCT gearbox. It is anticipated to be given a price tag in the range of Rs. 23-29 lakhs.
With its eyes set 40 per cent growth in sales in 2012, the other German auto giant all set to launch a new sedan in India is Audi. They intend to introduce their much successful sedan, i.e. S6, somewhere in November this year. The rather sporty sedan offers unmatchable practicality with the 4.0-litre TFSI V8 engine that churns out an exhilarating power of 420bhp and a torque of 550Nm. The quattro AWD with a 7-speed dual cluth gearbox offers a maximum speed of 250kmph. All of this will obviously accompanied by the trademark glamorous looks and design. The Audi S6 and the Q3 expected to launch in India.
Jaguar XJ L Ultimate
With all those sedans lined up for a launch, could Jaguar be much behind? Jaguar XJ L will be offered with the options of a 5.0-litre V8 petrol AJ-V8 engine or a 3.0-litre V6 diesel S AJ-V6D engine. Other than this, one can expect the typical suave looks and cutting-edge technology integrated into this Jaguar baby. This luxury sedan on offer by the Indian subsidiary of Jaguar Land Rover may be seen on Indian roads by December and is expected to cost Rs 90 Lakh. I shared that Renault Scala launching in 1st week of september.
