The Japanese brand Datsun showcased their GO Plus MPV, which is based on the Go hatchback. The unvieling took place in Indonesia couple of weeks ago and the vehicle is expected to make it debut at the 2014 Indian auto expo. GO Plus ducks under 4 meter therefore it entitles for excise benefits, which help the brand to price it affordably. The vehicle is expected to go on sales sometimes around June 2014 with a sub 5 lakhs price. This bare basic MPV is basically focusing on the middle class, though it would be a good option for the fleet operators if offered in a diesel avatar. Both the vehicles will be manufactured in the Nissan plant in Chennai and sold alongside Nissan portfolio in the dealerships across the country. According to the company officials there would be huge localization to keep the cost as low as possible.
When the Japanese people used to commute from one place to another through bicycles and carriages, Masujiro Hashimoto envisioned a car that was a pure Japanese breed, ‘DAT’. The first four- wheeler from the brand was launched as early as 1914 and the word DAT represented the three financiers who backed the development of that Datsun Car: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. The brand was growing with the speed of wildfire and the representation of DAT changed to Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy for a span of 30 years. With the fuel crunch in the 1960s the name fitted really well with the brand and it grew up to become a global success.
Datsun saw rapid growth in the whole era of 1970 and went to touch the global front in the 1980s. However, under the sound of success, the slow and steady retreat back to square one was barely noticed till it blew away the entry level giant in the year 1981. Datsun, the brand which was coveted by generations of customers for contemporary styling, modern engineering, durability and reliability, was phased out to give rise to the new kingdom of Nissan.
Nissan has announced the resurrection of its low cost brand Datsun which it would bring to India by 2014. Nissan is bringing this brand to India for the purpose of building and selling inexpensive cars. The prices of these cars are expected to fall under Rs. 4 lakh. This Japanese automaker will now have Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun in its portfolio with Datsun serving as the entry-level car brand. Datsun brand will be making cars that would target the young, first time buyers.
