The news that pinches all of us the most is, “Petrol and Diesel prices to hike soon”. This ‘soon’ comes so soon that we don’t even get the hang of it. And it is not a yearly thing, it may happen any time. Hyundai has taken a wise move to handle this situation by shifting to alternatives like LPG. Hyundai has silently introduced its Grand i10 in LPG variant. This year when most of the manufacturers are occupied nurturing facelifts of their popular cars, Hyundai has planned it smartly to give LPG version to its most desirable car Hyundai Grand i10.
Auto market was much simpler 8-10 years back. If we had to purchase a small car, we had limited options available as almost all the cars were similar in features and equipments. Today, the market has completely moved to the next level of competence. Now the term segment is too broad to describe, we are moving towards segments within segment. In simpler words, companies are introducing cars one above the other keeping the price tag slightly higher with upgraded features and styling to slot that car in a new shelf. Such an example can be seen in the form of new Hyundai Grand i10 which comes from the splendid fleet of cars made by an esteemed manufacturer, Hyundai. The car exactly fits between its sibling i10 and i20 in both terms of price and features. There was a definite reason behind this move from the Korean manufacturer and it was to counter Maruti Swift hatch which was targeting this sweet spot for a long time. The move has been successful so far as Hyundai Grand i10 within a three months of time span has created turmoil in this so called ‘sub-premium’ segment by increasing the sales numbers for the company as well as bragging the prestigious automotive ‘Indian Car of the Year 2014’ award.
In the recent years, Indian Auto Expo has been a land of globally Indian oriented unveilings and world debuts. This year the Hyundai Grand i10 sedan will be one of the most anticipated launches among 15 others. Grand i10 based sedan will be positioned in the entry level sedan category. The biggest rival of the Korean automajor is Maruti Suzuki which is the largest car maker in India. The vehicle will be rivaling against some of the segment leaders like the Swift DZire, hot selling Honda Amaze and some of the upcoming sedans like the Tata Manza CS. This compact sedan will be priced in the vicinity of the Amaze and DZire, and likely the manufacturer will be planning to hit sweet spot in between.
Indian small car market is no place for the faint-hearted; it is one of the most thriving, yet the most brutal car market. So far, Maruti Suzuki’s fort in the Indian auto market has been unbreachable but with the new war strategy that Hyundai is planning, the small car king's throne could soon be be up for grabs. Hyundai like Maruti, comes with the ability to launch innovative products and establish them in the market. The potential to gobble up Maruti’s share is definitely there but the gap between the two for now, is very large and Hyundai might have to satisfy itself with the second position as it may take another 5 - 7 years for the company to overtake the top runner Maruti.
